I discovered the other day, more or less accidentally, that it’s great fun to analyse certain trends I’m not quite sure about ye. I quickly realized that I really like this approach, and I greatly enjoy these posts! Let’s jump right in. Today we’re going to look at: corset belts.

As these funny looking belts became more and more difficult to ignore, I started asking myself how I like them. In campaigns and on photos I sort of liked the idea, not least since it brings the focus back on a body region that I have neglected for a while with all the over-size stuff I’ve been wearing: the waist.   Corset belts are now worn over sweaters, T-shirts and even jackets. In principle, I’m totally up for that – I like garments that can be somehow tied. Having said that, there’s also a weird aftertaste to the whole thing. Ironically, corset belts remind me of these awful corsages that were so ubiquitous in this worst of all fashion decades – the 2000s.   Remember the Paris Hilton style? Gaudy corsage, hip jeans and bling-bling? Sends a cold shiver down my spine, just thinking about it.

The style was so hip around 2005 (I believe), that these corsages were literally everywhere. Girls wore them at parties, to go shopping and, yes, in school. Somehow this image is engrained in my mind, and I have tried to avoid everything that comes even close ever since.   The same is actually true for these maxi-waist-belts (especially those with ar round buckle), which I thought were the best thing ever for a brief period but got completely tired of very soon afterwards. When it comes to waist belts I am still super cautious to the day.

And now we witness the emergence of a trend that combines these two terrible fashion sins. Waist belts and corsages.   Well, sometimes two minuses make a plus, right? In this case: yes.   While I am not a fan of either of the components that go into this trend, I have to say the corset belt works for me as a concept. I tried to interpret the trend for myself, to come up with a cool style, and I must say I think the outfit looks cooler with the belt than without. It’s clearly an eyecatcher, and a simple way to pimp a regular outfit with some style. I’m really happy with how this outfit turned out – so that’s a clear YES from for this trend. At least for the time being. How do you feel about it?

  1. I really like how you analysed the trend, because you always write like how it really is – no sugarcoats whatsoever. I think that’s the best part about your blog!

In Malaysia, we’re not super big on the corset trend yet, but I do see influencers wearing it already. While I personally won’t wear it (don’t think I can pull it off!), I really loved how you styled it. Adds a nice edge to it, and those heels are to die for!

We tried to cover trends from our end, but it wasn’t much of a success. You’ve definitely inspired us to try it out again, because I really enjoy reading your thoughts!

We have a style guides page too, https://shopprapp.com/style-guides, which I hope inspires you as much as yours did to me!

    All the way from Malaysia,
    Love, June from Shoppr

    1. Hi June,

thank you so much for your kind comment :)

But it’s interesting how different all the markets are. I thought maybe the asian market would loooove this new trend! :)

I’ll check your page later, too <3

xx to Malaysia from Berlin <3

  2. Ich liebe diesen Trend und habe auch erst letztens einen Blog Artikel darüber veröffentlicht. Am liebsten trage ich den Gürtel über einem Hemd oder einem T-Shirt Kleid. Liebst, Vanessa

  3. I personally am not very into it, my style is on the classic side. I think I really like it on you and how nice is it to see those amazing gold booties again.
Have you noticed the matching clothing belt trend? I am obsessed with anything from Gül Hürgel at the moment, wish I could afford it.

Have a great start into the new week Masha.
Love from sunny Bavaria (at least today)
