20. Weekly Update

“No matter where you are in life, you’ll save a lot of time by not worrying too much about what other people think about you. The earlier in your life that you can learn that, the easier the rest of it will be.”
― Sophia Amoruso

Back from Taiwan, I am slowly finding my bearings in Berlin again. My suitcase is still not unpacked, and neither is my head. Somehow this week passed like a dream. Before I could really ask myself what’s happening, I am already back in reality, typing this weekly update for you. Did I not just write the last one yesterday? Was I in Taiwan yesterday? Where have the days gone?
Well, the biggest upside to being in Berlin again is the nice weather here, while in Asia the rainy season is just about to start. While I was on the other side of the globe, summer has finally decided to pay Berlin a visit, and turned the whole city upside down. I find everything completely changed here, everyone’s happy, relaxed, everyone’s sitting outside and enjoys life. It’s great to be back home!
Next week I’ll have an interior post for you, also my first Taiwan story, plus a personal post. Lately I didn’t manage to write 4 posts a week, it was more like 3 on average. I’m thinking about reverting to my regular 4 posts per week schedule – or are you guys ok with 3? I would love to hear your feedback on this, please tell me openly: would you prefer more posts, or do you like the current frequency?
Next week I will also relaunch my Youtube account with the first new video. And I am also looking forward to an awesome concert, and hopefully to to see my best friend again! Looks like this is going to be a great week! :)

The Balcony Project 2.0
My home is a mess right now. It’s mainly due to the fact that I am so incredibly busy these days, and I just can’t seem to catch up with the chores. The thing is, I really need it to be tidy at home to be able to work properly. But with everything in disarray I can’t really focus on anything. I start something, then get distracted, move on to the next thing, and nothing gets finished that way. It drives me nuts.
One of these projects, which I really hope I’ll be able to finish next week, is my balcony. In all honesty, I haven’t done a thing with it in like half a year, and it looks awful. I am motivated though – I made a trip to the garden center and have already started planting the first flowers. Now I just need to clean up… and once that is done I’ll welcome the summer with a glass of wine outside!

Watched: :
This Netflix series is based on the life of Nasty Gal founder Sophia Amoruso, so it was an interesting watch also from a professional point of view. What’s the story behind this online shop with a multi-million turnover? According to Forbes, Amoruso is one of the youngest self-made millionaires in the online business, but who is the woman behind Nasty Gal really?
I watched the series (unfortunately I was through with it really quickly), and I can say that I have a much clearer idea now of who Sophia Amoruso is. Spoiler alert – she’s not the most likable character in the world, more like the biggest egomaniac. She’s not a protagonist to root for and empathize with, more like someone who knows exactly how to wrap those that are more capable than her around her finger. Maybe there is no other way to become one of the most successful entrepreneurs of the decade? I wonder. Either way, big business is not for the squeamish, that is shown very clearly.

Sometimes I’d love to have a content filter for Facebook, and I’d set it to the word ‚influencer‘. Wish I could mute all these posts. There seems to be an endless run of articles on the subject right now, most of them with generic headlines like ‚How to become an influencer‘, ‚Influencers you should know‘, and so on and so forth. I even noticed ads for analysis tools allegedly tailored to the needs of influencers. ‚Influencer‘ has become the catchphrase of the moment, the cure-all for every conceivable product.
But one aspect gets lost with this approach: personality.
Personally, I do not consider myself as a service company for enterprises, I rather see myself as content creator for my followers. May main reason for doing what I do is that I am following my personal dream. The financial aspect is secondary.
Sadly, it really seems like it’s all about money at this stage. I think that’s a real shame! The whole development reminds me of what’s going on in the music industry, where musicians risk less and less and stick to certain formulas that promise lots of clicks and some sales, all at the expense of more experimental music that carves out its own space. This is of course not true for all musicians, I don’t mean to imply that at all, but if you talk to people in the industry it’s a recurring theme and apparently a noticeable trend. Well, I see plenty of parallels to my own field here, that’s for sure. I hope the tide will change again soon, I hope we’ll be able to focus more on what really counts again: kick-ass content, and kick-ass music!

Fancy waffle ice cream!
Basically, I was served kind of a waffle with holes in it, together with delicious ice cream, whipped cream and toppings. Super, super tasty, and highly Instagramable. You get this calorie bomb at Chickenbuzz on Rosenthaler Strasse in Berlin Mitte.

In episode 18 of our podcast, Lisa and I are talking about weight problems at the start of the summer season, and devise a plan how to get our bodies and homes into shape for the warm months. It’s a really summery episode basically, we’re chatting about holidays and thinks like that too. Plus, we’re also bitching about the subject ‚influencer marketing‘, and we’re answering a bunch of follower questions.

  1. Masha,
3 posts a week is perfectly fine, but if you’re up for 4, I am down for reading what you post. Though, it seems that you also need the time to work on your home, so if you need the time to do that, make the time for it! Even if that means a little bit of time away from your blog. I can’t wait to see your next youtube video.

  2. Liebe Masha,

  3. There is just something… not honest about the word influencer in most cases it is being used now; seems like a pretty patch name for something that should be referred to as sales or sometimes even obvious manipulation. Reminds me of the good old joke about people not wanting to be cleaners but restores of surfaces.
