37. Weekly Update



Konichiwa from Tokyo!

Crazy stuff. I’m in Japan. After 11 hours on the plane I set my foot on Japanese soil, tired, a little confused, but also very happy and excited. The thing is, I’m on an extended multi-stop journey, working a lot on a bunch of super interesting projects, including one I cannot talk about. I still have to keep it secret.
All that said, I could not be in a better mood right now. Tokyo has always been on top of my list. Unfortunately the weather is not all that great, which means we can’t shoot as many photos as I’d like. I guess that means I’ll have to come back some day soon.
So, my soul is well, and fortunately my body is recovering from the terrible cold as well. It was quite a rough one, definitely didn’t help my mood the past couple of days. But yeah, I’m getting better.
And there’s another reason why the spirit is high: Tomorrow I’ll fly to the place that I fell head over heels in love with almost exactly one year ago: Iceland.
In other words, the situation is improving, and rapidly so :)

The project:
I decided to call it simply ‘the project’ from here on out. As I announced last week, the plan was to tell you about the big television project I am involved in, but there have been some changes on the production side and I was asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement which specifies exactly what I can and can’t tell you. The bottom line is this: I can’t tell you anything right now.
It’s a little frustrating, since that means I can’t do Instastories related to the project. Also, I already teased it, and we have already shot in Berlin and Munich, with Iceland and Lissabon to follow soon. Well, the information blackout lasts for only a month, and by the end of October I will FINALLY be able to share what we’ve been working on with all of you :)

If everything is an advertisement, then advertising means nothing.
It really gets on my nerves that we’re now supposed to declare all posts as ads in which any kind of brand is so much as mentioned – regardless of whether we bought the products ourselves or whether it is a paid cooperation. That would be the safe route anyways, a preparation for the next wave of cease-and-desist letters, but seriously, isn’t that a little crazy? If everything is classified as an ad, what does the concept even mean in the end?
Sometimes I really consider putting an ‘infomercial’ header over my blog, just to make sure no one will get on my case without due reason.
I do think it is important to declare paid cooperations, but if I borrow products because I like then, or if I buy them myself, the relationship with the brand is quite different. Apparently such mentions of brands will be classified as ads in the future. I wonder whether this is due to the fact that the whole industry is so new, and that the people who pass these laws simply have no clue what they are talking about. Or maybe it’S downright harassment (print and other media do not seem to be affected, by the way). In my eyes, this neither helps the case of transparency towards the reader, nor does it provide any added informative value.
It is just pointless, plain and simple. How do you feel about the issue?

    Japan steht auch noch auf meiner Travel Bucket List ich finde die Menschen dort einfach super interessant. Auf dein “Projekt” bin ich schon super gespannt und kann es kaum abwarten bis du uns genaueres verrätst. :D Also das mit dieser ganzen Werbekennzeichnung ist wirklich total sinnlos. Da bin ich total deiner Meinung. Ehrlich gesagt blicke ich nichtmal ganz durch und ich habe das Gefühl das sich niemand so wirklich auskennt damit, was denn nun gekennzeichnet gehört und was nicht.

  3. Almost everything is an ad now though. Companies have unfortunately learnt that soft marketing works better than hard marketing and even opening one’s fridge without a sight of some unwanted adverts starts to become more and more difficult :)
