Spring has finally arrived, and with it the desire for new clothes.   But what to do when the wardrobe is chaotic or poorly arranged? If you don’t really know anymore what you need and what you already have?   Today, I compiled 9 tips for you how to perfectly organize your wardrobe. Hopefully they will motivate you to get things into order in your home. And while we’re add it, I’ll also throw in a voucher code for a clothes rack :)

Take everything out It helps me to tidy up my closet once a year, inside out. In order to be able to do that, I need to take everything out, which also provides the perfect opportunity to get an overview of everything I actually have.   What do I even own?   It’s usually much more than I thought, and to take it all out helps me to let go of some pieces and to remember long-forgotten items (see also point 3). I take the classic approach: one pile of YES, one pile of NO, one pile of MAYBE. The ‘maybe’ pile goes back into the closet as well, and the pieces that I still didn’t wear by the time the next spring clean comes around are then going on the ‘no’ pile

Type over color Many people make the mistake to arrange their clothes entirely by color. But it makes much more sense to arrange it by type of clothing (e.g. pullovers, T-Shirts, tops). The sections this created can then still be arrange by color in the next step. Not only is this kind of presentation easy on the eye, it is also more logical in my opinion.

From Old to New How about a little bit of DIY?   You can turn long jeans into shorts, a nicely cut jacket gets a modern twist with some new buttons, and even the most boring bag can be pimped with a permanent market. Many people don’t really dare to customize pieces of clothing, for fear of destroying them, but let’S be honest: much better to take that risk than to hoard garments in your closet that you know you won’t wear again.   You find some great DIY ideas here, here and here – and usually you don’t even need a special talent to make something interesting. A simply change can work wonders sometimes, and you may even end up with a new favorite piece!

The 100 Garment Wardrobe Let’s face it: we don’t really need all that stuff we have. Still, it is difficult to stop at a certain point. A friend of mine arranges her wardrobe based on a really interesting principle: the 100 garment wardrobe. Sounds easy, until you realize how quickly you hit the 100 item mark (yes, this includes socks, underwear and shoes!). Well, in this approach, every item is carefully selected, and for every new piece, and old one needs to go. If I wasn’t a fashion blogger I’d really consider this one. Sounds great, doesn’t it? You focus on 100 great garments instead of hoarding more and more and more.

Everything needs to be readily visible Not only is the arrangement important, the technique counts as well. I, for my part, try to hang as muhc as possible. That said, I am also a fan of drawers. T-Shirts and sweaters are easily foldable, after all!   I try to fold everything into a small rectangle and to stack it up vertically so I see at first sight what I have in a drawer when I pull it out. Basically, it means I don’t have to rummage around. I am much faster and more efficient, and it’s easier to keep things in order. Another really good idea: display one shoe from the front and one from the back. Not only will you be able to see both sides at a glance, you also save space.

Organize small stuff with boxes What to do with all the small items like jewelry, belts and dust bags?   I like to use boxes.   I keep less decorative items in white, marked boxes, and the decorative stuff in transparent plastic boxes (i.e. by Muji). This is a great way to store sun glasses and jewelry, for example. Everything looks much neater, and you know straight away what to find where.

The right hanger Personally, I really don’t like it when there are too many different hangers in my closet. I prefer consistent (thin) wire hangers. There are many great alternatives to the really cheap ones on the market by now. The advantage of wire hangers is obviously the style factor, plus they’re cheaper and save space. The disadvantage is that for some items you simply need wider hangers to make sure your garments don’t lose their shape, like, for example, heavy pullovers and jackets. There are also specific textile coated hangers for silk tops that otherwise slide off all to easily.

Use separators For my socks and underwear, I like to use separators in my drawers. Just makes it easier to find stuff. I separate top and bottom garments and bikinis, and I also systematically arrange my socks that way. As an added bonus, you will find that you lose far fewer items this way. While separators and little baskets are very inexpensive, you could also make your own using shoe boxes.

Closets don’t need to be ugly Special items get a special place in my closet. Whoever said that garments can’t serve a decorative function? Well, I have a clothes rack in my office room, where I hang pieces that I am currently spotlighting. In my case that’s usually a mixture of items that I wear often (jackets and cardigans), along with new garments and pieces that I’m looking to shoot in the near future. This is another method that helps me to keep track of what I have, and helps me to stay organized. And on top of it, my garments serve as decoration for the room.

By the way: the clothes racks on my pics are by Rackbuddy, a design company from Denmark. I have four of these Rackbuddy racks in different places in my flat. They form a recurring, unified concept in my living space. You can use the racks for more than clothes, too, as you can see on my picture. I took the company’s motto „Design. Build. Make it yours“ to heart, and started using the racks to hang plants from little hooks. How would you use the racks in your flat?

With the code Masha10 you get a 10% discount on these cool racks – offer is valid until May 7.

  1. Thanks Masha! I love the post and will definitely try out some of your tips. Especially when traveling oftern, it’s not always easy to keep things in place (and in the closet ;-)
