5 audiobooks for a road trip

What could be more awesome than hopping in a car and cruising through a beautiful landscape, to explore distant countries and to feel completely free on the road? I just love road trips so much!

But if you’ve ever been on a trip where you spent many hours on the road every day, you know the particular challenge of a good playlist: at some point you’ve just heard it all, you talked about everything… and then? Well, in those moments nothing beats putting on a great audiobook, leaning back and listening with your travel companion.

As you may already know, I’m the world’s biggest fan of audiobooks. I’m into a whole range of genres, from fantasy and sci-fi to historical novels. While I do love music, I just need my audiobooks or podcasts sometimes. Especially during activities that don’t require much concentration, and that tend to be rather monotonous – like driving for hours on end for example. The perfect situation to put on a good audiobook.

In Scotland we drove up to 8 hours on some days, which means we had plentyof opportunities to listen to stuff. And when you have someone to listen with you, someone you can talk about the story with, you hit the jackpot – that’s even better than listening to stories on your own. Theresa and I did just that during our 10 days in Scotland, so I figured instead of sharing a music playlist with you I’ll tell you about our top five audiobooks on the road-trip through Scotland:

If we were meant to be to stay in one place we’d have roots instead of feet.

J.K. Rowling – Harry Potter
If there’s one book I felt I just HAD to include, it’s Harry Potter, hands down. The time in Scotland brought up so many memories of Harry potter, and it was amazing to listen to the stories again while moving in the environment that inspired them. We felt like part of the magical world that the author describes. And being the huge fan I am, I was of course an easy target. I could re-read and re-listen anytime.

Marc-Uwe Kling – Quality Land (dark edition)
I LOVE Marc-Uwe Kling, not least since his Kangaroo Chronicles, and I was dying to hear his newest book. Fortunately, my high expectations were more than met, the book is incredibly funny! It’s a bit darker than I expected, and with a political subtext, but a genuinely amazing listening experience. ‘Pinky’s’ voice alone – you have to hear it! Huge recommendation!

Diana Gabaldon – Feuer und Stein
Imagine you’re being transported back into Scotland, A.D. 1743. Suddenly you find yourself in the middle ages and have to find your way around. This suspenseful novel, in which we follow the adventures of the protagonist Claire Randall pulls you in from the go, and the best thing: you actually learn a lot about the history of Scotland. As we cruised through the Scottish Highlands I felt like transported back in time with Claire, and it was as if the dark days of war between England and Scotland had come to life around me.

Dave Eggers – The Circle
After watching the film I was really looking forward to the book, and once again I was not disappointed. I felt the book has a slightly more serious tone, and it shows a very bleak vision of the future. Perfect for fans of Black Mirror!

Titanic Podcast
Apart from audiobooks we also loved listening to podcasts! Audible introduced a range of podcasts recently, which are produced exclusively for the platform and are free for members! We found a whole bunch of really cool ones, but my favorite was the one by Titanic, the satirical German magazine. Like the mag, the podcast pokes fun at society in characteristically witty fashion. Make sure to check this one out!

All audiobooks are available in Audible, my favorite platform for audiobooks and podcasts – an indispensable tool on my journeys. I love that audible has introduced podcasts, makes the platform even more amazing than it already was!

  3. After my laser eye surgery I was stuck in a dark room for two weeks – which I spent listening to over 130h of Harry Potter. Taking pain aside, I very much recommend the listening binge :)
