Berlin Fashion Week Highlights

It’s a tradition that the German capital marks the first stop of the international fashion circus, and like every year, the fashion week season opened it Berlin. With the European football championship in full swing, the fashion events were relocated. Instead of the usual venue, Brandenburg Gate, the whole operation moved up North to Erika-Heß ice stadium in Berlin’s Wedding district. On top of it, many designers chose to show their creations at exclusive off-site locations. One particular favorite was the Crown Prince Palace with its huge garden area, all conveniently located close to the center and supported by German Vogue magazine.

Marina Hoermanseder Her collection? Like every season, an absolute dream and a real beacon of hope for the entire event. On Thursday, a breeze of couture swept through the garden of Crown Prince Palace in Berlin Mitte, which was the most exclusive venue of this year’s Fashion Week. Inspired by the French Riviera with pearls and petals galore, topped of with an abundance of Swarovski crystals – Hoermanseder’s designs were as feminine as it gets. We are swept off our feet!

Malaika Raiss Malaika Raiss impresses season after season. The designer launched her label six years ago and has been a staple at Berlin Fashion Week ever since. Her creations have a feminine, playful touch, with an air of confidence and artfulness. Raiss’ spring/summer 2017 collection is mainly inspired by the Carribean. Shell seams harmonize with light colors and clear cuts, while gently flowing materials add to an overall summery note. Malaika Raiss is one of the biggest stars among German designers, but has her feet firmly on the ground and stays true to her Berlin attitude.

  William Fan William Fan That brings us to probably the smartest marketer this season. At the start of his show, William Fan made a point of announcing: ‘You have to stick around after the show. Something grand is about to happen.’ As it turned out, Fan went beyond creating a fashion collection: based on the overarching theme ‘The Day After’, the designer created a fabulous collection AND an entire lifestyle concept, which included home-accessories, vases and dinnerware made of porcelain, furniture and jewelry – from the runway straight into your home.   Dawid Tomaszewski How good a match are Marrakech and Blondie? An excellent one! The Berlin based designer, who is a real regular at Berlin Fashion Week (this year’s show was his fourteenth!) managed to tie together wearable clothing and couture, inspired by oriental elements like spice colors and the traditionally flat Morrocan shoe and Blondie’s party style from the 80’s, with an added aesthetic note based on the photography of Wolfgang Tillmans. Tomaszewski’s collection rained down on us like confetti, a flurry of different materials ranging from rhinestones, feathers and leather to chiffon. Personal highlights My personal highlights were the shows of Marina Hoermanseder, Dimitri and David Tomaszewski and the entire day I spent with the McArthurGlen video team, which meant I had front row seats and backstage access, where I was also able to conduct some interviews. That was quite a change of perspective for me, usually I’m the one speaking into the microphone. I loved it. You can read in more detail about my experience here.

   

More highlights Hien Le with a sporty collection in blue and white. Cotton meets pleats, silk meets wool – a summer look can not possibly be more beautiful than this.   Dimitri presented a collection inspired by myths and legends of his home country Greece. Apart from a classic ready-to-wear line, the designer also wowed his audience with a bathing fashion collection in tender pastel tones, decorated with gemstones, sequin and cut-outs to impressive effect.   Newcomer Philomena Zanetti. Her spring/summer 2017 collection was dominated by graphic elements and clear lines as well as light colors, much white and soft pink. Designer Julia Leifert continues to incorporate a critical perspective and confident look on fashion.

News The Designer For Tomorrow Award (this year with Albert Elbaz as the chairman of the jury) went to Edda Gimes.   Once again, a wide range of designers showed their collections at the Vogue Fashion Salon, among them many up-and-coming designers like William Fan, Marina Hoermanseder and Horror Vacui (unbelievable pretty pajamas), PB0110 (exquisite bags), Rianna + Nina, Fragment (Couture from Berlin) and Fomme. Surprise: for the first time, Escada also showed its collection in the Crown Prince Palace venue. The label – not exactly the newest player on the scene – presented a completely overhauled s/s 2017 collection and showed that it’s still serious competition for the youngsters.

  4. Ich fand die Aufmachung von Marina Hoermanseder wirklich wunderschön. Dank Snapchat bekommen auch wir daheim-gebliebenen einen tollen Einblick. War echt sensationell schön die Show und v.a. die Kleider. Liebe Grüße Jen

  5. Schon wieder fand eine Fashion Week statt – ohne mich. Ich möchte so gerne mal dabei sein, ist bestimmt super aufregend und interessant. <3
    Die vorgestellten Outfits sind ja meistens sehr extravagant, aber auf jeden Fall aufregend und kein Stück langweilig. So eine Show mal live zu sehen fände ich total toll – schön, dass du wieder dabei sein durftest. :)

  8. Schöner Einblick und schönes Video. Ich war erst etwas überrascht, was die Mc ArthurGlenn Outlets damit zu tun haben, aber es soll wohl einfach um Mode an sich gehen und nicht um die Mode, die sie in ihren Outlets verkaufen.

    Marina Hoermanseder finde ich auf Fotos immer ganz schön, auch wenn ein bisschen was Neues kommen könnte. Ich habe mir dann auch einmal die kleinen blumigen Beutel für das Handgelenk in natura angeschaut. Da fand ich sie dann allerdings nicht mehr so wertig, das Leder war mir persönlich für ein derartiges Design viel zu steif. Ich hätte es nicht am Handgelenk haben wollen. Aber das ist ja Geschmacksache und die Idee dahinter, finde ich nach wie vor cool.

    WOW, hier ist dir ein super Rücklick auf die Fashion Week gelungenen. Ich mag die kurzen Absätze über die einzelnen Designer sehr und mir gefallen übrigens auch die bunten Überschriften bzw. die Schriftart. Mein persönliches Highlight war auch die Marina Hoermanseder Show. Die Looks und Farben haben mir super gut gefallen und ich war überrascht, wie viele tolle Accessoires es in der Kollektion gibt. Bei meiner nächsten Fashion Week möchte ich unbedingt mal eine Show von Malaika Raiss sehen. Seit ihrer Star Wars Schmuck Kollektion, folge ich der Designerin aufmekrsam.   12. Ich habe kürzlich in einem ausführlichen Artikel von c’est Clairette gelesen, dass es eigentlich “im Wedding”, nicht “in Wedding” heißt. Sosehr mich der Name dieses Stadtteiles allein schon irritiert: na, wie denn jetzt?

    Ich finde die letzte Kreation mit den “aufgemalten” Linien am interessantesten, weil es mehr wie tragbare Kunst wirkt. Philomena Zanetti hört sich auch interessant an.

    Hörmannseder mag ich gerne, aber mir reicht ihre Pastellorgie inzwischen auch schon ein bisschen. Ich hätte gern mal etwas andere Farben! Aber die Armschelle-Handtasche gefällt mir irgendwie. Da ist “Edge” drin! :)
    Malaika Raiss kann mich leider nicht sehr begeistern, vielleicht bin ich aber auch gerad einfach nicht in der Stimmung, das für mich zu übersetzen.
