Oops, where did this week’s Sunday Post go?
Don’t worry! It hasn’t disappeared – quite on the contrary! By now I’m pretty confident that – after some changes and planning – I’ll manage to make my Sunday Posts a regular feature again this year. You see, one of my resolutions for 2019 is to think in new (or old) formats, which means there will be a regular, weekly Sunday Post, every Sunday apart from the first of the month. From here on out, the first Sunday of every month is reserved for a monthly review. You may remember the format from my previous weekly review feature. This change has a bunch of advantages, including a bit of variety in my posting schedule, and it also allows me to direct particular focus on the most recent podcast episode, which we will now publish every first Sunday of the month (more on that below). Are these good news, you ask? Absolutely! And as I sit here, writing these lines (it’s 10:42 pm, and I only slept 5 hours last night), I am smiling broadly, filled with the certainty that my life finally – at good last – is mine again.
The thing is: I’m up for it. I’m completely up for trying something new. I’m up for breathing new life into some old projects. I’m up for working, I’m driven to produce. And I’m wholly, completely up for taking you along on the journey, for you to be part of it.
But let’s start at the top.
I wish I was a little more like you, and a little less like me. I wish I had your confidence, and I wish I could simply turn my back to the life and responsibilities I chose for myself. For a few weeks, if nothing more, or at least a couple of days. But I can’t leave. Next year, for sure, next year I will. I have said that for years, you know. And each year I get more caught up in the frenzy, each year the prospect of leaving my hamster-wheel becomes more frightening. I am afraid of freedom. I am afraid of being like you. And at the same time I envy you. I envy you because I see you and your freedom, while I am caught in my wheel.
News:
Did you see that I now have a second Instagram account? You can now also follow me on @mashaloves_ – and 5000 of you already do! The account is a little bit more private, more spontaneous, and I show pictures you won’t see on @masha, or much later. Contrary to my @masha channel, on @mashaloves_, there is no feed. I was simply up for trying something new, and had the idea to open a second account, which gives me more freedom to post spontaneously. Of course, you can keep following me on @masha as well – I’m super happy to tell you that I just cracked the 200k mark with my main account.

Our podcast also underwent a bunch of changes. The biggest change is that for the foreseeable future we will only produce one episode per month, which we will always publish on the first Sunday of every month, parallel to my monthly review here on the blog. I am extremely happy that we’re continuing the project, and that Lisa and I have made up again. A bunch of misunderstandings have led us into a bit of a friendship crisis, but since friendships – just like relationships – need care and maturity, we did what grown-ups are said to be doing: we spoke openly about our feelings, and also about our hurt. This fair communication, this openness actually strengthened the bond between us, and we emerge from this crisis closer than we ever were. What I mean by saying that? Find out in our latest episode, where we talk about why distance is important every once in a while, and why that is totally ok.

Favorite project:
Whoop, whoop! Did you see my Porsche x Ramp Projekt project? The current issue of Ramp features an editorial spread in which I take the role of a GDR spy of sorts, and I’m on a mission with Porsche. I got a full retro makeover styling, with over the top hairdos, and we shot in fantastic locations. If you follow me on Instagram, you probably won’t have missed the pictures. I am so in love with the shots that I had to share a bunch of them straight away. You can’t imagine how proud I am. The shoot itself was a major production, and it was just enormous fun to slip into a role like this. Let’s see what the year brings, I hope I can realize more projects like this.
Watched
Fyre. Do you remember Fyre festival and the news that broke following the disaster it turned out to be? Netflix has just released a documentary about it, and holy moly, what a train-wreck that festival was. The documentary raises the mirror to our society, shows us how absurd this whole social media world has become, and how much money people are willing to pay to somehow feel they are a part of the “social media elite”. While the whole festival completely fell apart, I couldn’t really sympathize much with those involved, neither with the organizers nor with the attendants. I only felt real empathy for the Bahamian lady featured in the documentary. The good news: about 100.000 USD were raised on gofundme to cover at least some of the debt owed to the Bahamian people.
Learned:
Vegan leather always comes at a price, if it is produced in an environmentally friendly way. I always had it in my head that artificial leather can’t be as expensive as real leather. Well, live and learn. Producing high quality vegan leather in an environmentally friendly way is a cost-intensive undertaking, and requires considerable know-how. So I scrapped another cliché in my mind, which went: artificial leather = cheap.
Food:
I ate a vegan burger with jackfruit patty – and I’m blown away. It tastes a bit like meat, but it’s 100% vegan. Unfortunately, it was served in the Berliner restaurant Hermann’s, where the menu changes every week. Does anyone know another place in Berlin where I can eat jackfruit burgers all year round?
Read:
The book “Beneath a Scarlet Sky” really gripped me. The novel is based on a true story, and tells of a young Italian who saved the lives of many Jews during their persecution in the Nazi Third Reich by bringing them over the border into Switzerland. This is a book to make you think and feel. I can only recommend it to all of you from the bottom of my heart. Seems like a Hollywood adaptation is already under way, and I’m honestly not surprised: this is an incredible story of love, empathy, courage and hope.
Sad:
I cried on the inside when I saw all those real fur coats at Copenhagen Fashion Week. And I say that as an absolute fan of Copenhagen Fashion Week – it’s my favorite. Not only because of the wonderful fashion that is shown there, but also in large part because I love the people and street style up there. It was all the more shocking to see that fur is apparently en vogue again. And I really thought it has gotten through to even the last influencer by now that fur is a real no-go. Looks like we’re regressing, rather than progressing. I’m deeply disappointed about this development.
New Label to watch:
I have been in love with the label ROKH for what feels like ages. The perfect successor to Celine, in my opinion. It makes sense: Rok Hwang previously worked under Phoebe Philo for Celine. If that’s not the perfect premise to become THE new it-label, I really don’t know.
