Now, a little less than half a year later I can finally share the first impressions of our flat with you. Let’s start with the main area: the living room.
This is the room that is closes to being ‘ready’, but there’s still a bit to do here. I wonder how long it’s going to take before I consider it done, maybe years. I have too many ideas competing in my head right now, and the room is a clean canvas which needs to be filled with new memories. That’s probably going to take a while. The sofa and the sideboard are the first pieces we bought for our old flat when we started to make it comfortable for ourselves. We have added many more pieces of furniture since, but these first items bring the warmth of a beloved home to any place for me. My new favorite item in the living room is our carpet, which ties it all together. It gives the whole room a very cosy atmosphere and makes the room livable. I really love my berber carpet (link), it’s a genuine piece from North Africa, and I pretty much guard it with my life.
Berber carpets are usually made from sheep wool and are mainly produced in Morocco, where they are traditionally woven in characteristically geometric patterns. Since its all manual work, the patterns are usually a little irregular, as you see with my carpet as well. If you ask me, that makes it even more charming. Every single piece is a unique item and not mass produceable that way. Makes it special.
Carpets are a cool subject in general, there are plenty of really beautiful ones out there. Traditional Persian rugs and Kelims, modern wool carpets, the list is long. You get a good chance to browse at onloom – the platform ships to Austria, Switzerland and – at good last – now also to Germany. The choice is huge, and you’ll also find brands like the Berlin based label The Knots, and shipping is free of charge, which is a nice bonus. I have to say carpets are very important for me, they are a really crucial component to make a space comfortable and inviting. Works especially well for me if the carpet is a fluffy.
So those are the basic components of our living room. Still missing are curtains and many, many pictures. I’m looking forward to filling this space with loads and loads of new memories. This is my new home, and our life here has only just started.
