We live in a world in which more and more products are made available to us with the promise to make our life simpler and easier: a new app, a new technology, another castle in the sky.   Some products are indeed amazing – others just appear to be. Some products are tailored specifically to a very specific niche and are used frequently, others lose their initial appeal rather quickly. As far as new technologies are concerned, it definitely makes sense to take a closer look, and often it is best to wait for a little while before making a purchase. Many first generation products are test-balloons to gauge market potential. In other words, they are nice gadgets for grown ups, but nothing you would frequently use.

I considered high tech watches and wrist trackers, which are currently flooding the market, to be firmly in that latter category of products. They are good fun, but I somehow always lost my interest rather quickly. In the end there was always something I didn’t like about it, so I didn’t bother to recommend any of these products to you. I kind of thought I was already over the whole Smartwatch thing. Well, and then I flew to Basel.   Basel is where Fossil is based, and just in time for Basel World the company presented a new Fossil hybrid product – a new smartwatch. I was looking forward to the presentation, it all sounded really interesting: the watch was supposed to look like a regular watch. ‘Good start’, I felt.   And when I got the chance to use the product I was actually blown away. The Fossil Q Hybrid Smartwatch contains many functions that I found sorely lacking with other brands. Not once have I taken it off my wrist since I got it (not kidding!), not under the shower, not in bed. It has become a part of me. Why? Because it is absolutely genius.   The watch is thought out really well, it is designed for the challenges of every-day life. In a nutshell, this Smartwatch is a product I can recommend from the bottom of my heart, not least since I had the chance to gather some experience in the field. So, what makes it so special? Let me sum it up for you in three points, and I promise they are amazing.

The case   Let’s start with the most obvious aspect – the visual one. At first sight the watch looks like a regular watch with a regular face, normal size and normal weight. A second glance reveals that something is different. The watch has three little buttons on one side and a second, smaller face. Noticing this, you start to understand that this is not a regular watch.   For my part, I am simply not a big fan of the standard Smartwatch look, which is a real obstacle to wearing them. This solution, on the other hand, is wonderful, and available in many different varieties. Whether you prefer a golden watch with a black leather strap of a silver watch with embedded rhinestones and a strap of stainless steel – there is a perfect model for everyone, and on top of it with a very fair price point of 200 euros and an overall great price-performance ratio.

The interior   You know what really bugs me about most Smartwatches? The constant recharging.   Most Smartwatches have to be charged at least once per day, but the Fossil Hybrid stands out in this respect as well. It runs on a normal battery, which should be replaced by a watchmaker every few months. Of course I would prefer it if I had to change the battery even less frequently, but once every few months is already a huge improvement over once per day.   The app shows me my current battery status, which helps to make sure it’s always charged. There are two more built-in advantages to this watch: it is waterproof, and has Bluetooth connectivity instead of Wifi. On top of it, the app is laid out so simply and intuitively that it’s practically fool proof. Yep, that means even i understood it.

The functions:   Now to the main question: what does this watch do? For starts, it doesn’t include unnecessary functions, that much is clear.   The watch acts as your tracker, i.e. it counts your steps (and vibrates when you reached the daily target, and it can even track your sleep and tell you how long and how restful it was.   You can also activate vibration to notify you of incoming messages of certain persons. I have 4 contacts in my favorites, four people for who I like to be notified with vibration to know straight away that this is an important message for me. There are definitely a bunch of practical upsides to it all, since I know straight away if a message is important for me, which means I don’t have to stay close to my phone all the time.   But let’s talk about more of my favorite functions. I must say, the Fossil watch designers really had their heads screwed on. Here are 5 more functions:

1. the watch finds your phone! I already love this function to bits, as I always leave my phone somewhere and go through frequent panics trying to find it. The watch has sort of a mobile-phone search function, which also works when your phone is switched to silent mode. Push the button and your phone will ring!   2. It works as a self-timer! Just open the camera app, position your mobile phone camera and push the button. There you have your picture. Perfect for me!   3. It wakes you up gently! Set an alarm in the app and a tender vibration will wake you up at the set time. Bye bye, annoying alarm-clock ringing.   4. It let’s you control your music! Pushing the buttons, you can skip forward, back, or pause the track without even having to touch your phone with its annoying passcode.   5. You live between times! A practical function which I utilize a lot on the road is to set a second timezone. When I’m in NY and would like to know at a glance what time it is in Berlin I just push a button and the watch has an answer for me. This one falls more into the gadget category, but still, it’s really useful to have it all at a glance.

      xx

  5. I’ ve always thought tech watches are useless as far at the technology advancement goes but wow this watch is just perfect! I especially love the ‘finds your phone’ feature!

P.S Do you really take a shower with your watch on?! How? Why?:P

    Have a good Tuesday Masha!
Thanks so much for the inspiration.
    Love from https://tbymallano.com/

    1. yeah I use the find your phone feature quite often. I can’t even imagine old times, searching you phone, never knowing if it’s lost or not!

PS: Yeah! I’m too lazy to put of most of my jewelry before taking a shower. First it was very strange, because usually I never leave my watch on, neither for sleeping or bathing, but know it feels normal :D
